Lumière: barsyusha

Lumière: opheliac

Lumière: barsyusha

Lumière: „I needed air“ by Patrick Mader translation by Andrea The Swiss skating star Stephane Lambiel changed everything one year before the Olympic games. The 19-year old split up with his coach, management and girlfriend. Will the splitting process work? Or will it turn out to be a risk like the cases of other young athletes show? The left knee up high, head leaned back, palms turned upwards, upper body leaned back, lower and lower until the left hand grabs the rigth skate. The body twist itself elegantly while going faster and faster, looses its line like in a painting by Claude Monet, to find its for again seconds lateralmost clearer than before. Stephane Lambiel is practicsing the spin for which he is known all over the world, practices and practices the same element over and over. Trainer Cedric Monod is taping it. The videos help to improve the next repetition. From the boxes of the ice rink Montchoisi in Lausanne, Tracy Chapman is announcing a revolution “….they’re talking about a revolution…” the singer whispers. Lambiel is the best skater in Switzerland. At the world championships in March in Dortmund the 19-year-old placed fourth and with that gave a medal-promise for the Olympic Winter Games in 2006. But suddenly everything is different. The son of a Portugese and a man from Wallis (a/n: area where he used to live, was quite difficult to properly translate ;)) doesn’t talk about the revolution. He already started it. “I had to change something, it was showing more and more. But until summer, I didn’t know what to change.” Interruption to think Lambiel passed the maturite in June and returned to the ice ambitious, injured the already pressured knee and decided for an operation. The interruption he used to think and came to conclusion to split up with his coach Peter Grutter, who had been accompanying and forming him since ten years. Grutter who felt the urge of his student to split, took the first step. He left himself. Ten years, in which Grutter not only took the role of the coach, but also the role of a “substitute” dad. Because when Stephane was fourteen father lambiel left the family. Grutter turned in his double role a almost uber-“important person, that skating coaches often portray. Mostly they’re older women in fur coats or older men with fatherly charisma, who stay at the side of the rink and then when waiting for the marks of the judges smile and wave to the camera. “I needed air to breathe”, says Lambiel after the practice in the restaurant of the rink Montchoisi. His voice sounds thin and fragile. His base cap covers a lot of his face. “The new move was necessary. I want to go forward, grow up, not be the little Stephane anymore.” The split with the coach spread to other areas. Lambiel moved away – out of the 3000 population city of Saxon in the lower Wallis, where he grew up, and into the lively city of Lausanne in the Waadt area, where he started a study in economics in october and moved in with a colleague in a three room appartement. He broke up with his coach and already before the split with his coache also partet ways with the management company, that dealed with his show and media appearances and his sponsoring. “That Stephane cancelled the contract was really surprising.”, says Sandra Waldvogel of Art on Ice. The work now only concentrates to the booking of show appreances. The laugther that follows her words shows a sligth confusion. It wouldn’t be that easy to find sponsors in a not so well known sport like figure skating. “I would have advised him to say no.”, says ex-coach Grutter an adss a bit quiter. “If I had known before.” Lambiel leans back relaxed. “I can now do what I want and feel free.” He wants his management in the family, he says and moves his cap almost as if realizing that he doesn’t need its protection any longer. “My uncle and his friend now deal with the sponsors.” His voice turns louder, deeper. “I’m sure they will do well. I trust them.” Advisor and friend instead of master As a “very, very sensitive guy” coach Cedric Monod describes his new student. “Stephane is an artist who needs air to breathe. I will see that he can get exactly that.” Monod, who used to be a pairs skater, is with thirty years one of the youngest coaches in the sport. He thinks a generation of coaches is coming who will give the skaters more independence, who understands to be more of a friend and advisor than a master. A coincidence brougth the two together. Monod passed a bus stop with his mofa, where Lambiel was waiting. Two hours later they met again in the city center and Lambiel rejected the thougths of a coincidence. “It was more a meeting fate.” Getting together with Monod helped the 19-year old with his splits. But the break already appeard after the Worlds in spring when the music choice for the free program was a topic. Lambiel decided for the music of the “Truman Show”: for a montone music, which turns unexpectedly and supported by violins almost aggressive and dramatic. The “Truman Show” is a movie about the insurance company worker Truman Burbank. Truman believs to live in a city on an island. He never left it because he is scared of the water. Truman doesn’t know, that he’s the star of a gigantic tv-show and actually lives in the world’s largest tv-studio. All persons around him are only actors. The directors decide what is happening in Truman’s life. Only after 20 years he gets suspicious and after a short time only has one goal: leaving the world where he is as head role only a statist. In which he actually suceeds because he dares to cross the water. Natural Process When Stephane Lambiel skates his free program, he portrays the freeing of Truman from his artistical world in an artistic way. Its easy for him to connect with the theme. And he’s feeling since his freeing as well as Truman does at the end of the movie when he breaks the walls of the tv studio. Lambiels splitting process is natural, not stoppable especially with younger, ambitious athletes. Those who start to follow a daily training schedule early. Those who on many private things, rarely find space to develop the own personality, because they’re burdened with many things. Not always this splits have a postiv effect on the athletic development. Anita Weyermann was the star of the Swiss Athletic team, she won 97 World bronze and one year later Europeans bronze medal over 1500 meter. Her dad Fritz was the coach. Together they lived in Gumligen and together they had success until the runner had no air to breath – like Lambiel. Like the figure skater Weyermann’s split with the dad mixed with the beginning of the study in economics – he in Lausanna, she in Bern. Like Lambiel the reason of the split was a personal one and not lack of knowledge of the coach. Anity Weyermann wasn’t successful anymore after that, tried different coaches, decided to go back to her father for a while. Today she’s counting on herself. Martina Hingis was formed by her mother Melanie Molitor to the worlds number 1 since she was two years old. A close relationship which mixed atheltic with private development. 1999 Hingis tried to get independet. Before the famous Wimbledon championship she split up with her mother. She lost in the first round and returned to the familiar background. Patty Schnyders split was less easy. She joined with the so-called healer Rainer Harnecker, who accompanied her as coach, boyfriend and guru to the championships. She fougth with her parents, because they didn’t approve of her relationship. The split was unstopable and final. Today Schnyder is married with Rainer Hoffmann. She’s found her balance again. Not stopable Roger Federe’s splitting process has a postiive only progress. One and a half years ago the player from the Basel area parted ways with his promoter IMG. He let his parents and his girlfriend Mirka Vavrince manage him, also people whom he trusts. A half year later, in the middle of the comete like rise to the world’s number 1 he split with his long time coach Peter Lundgren. Since then he’s touring without a coach and is unstopable. Stephane Lambiel acted in a similar way that Federer did: Leaving the management, then the coach, trusting the family. “I don’t want to copy anyone”, he says. The similarities are coincidence. He thinks Federer is cool, “his achievments amazing”. He hopes that his revolution takes a similar postivie way like that of the tennis player. “I want to give everything. If that’s not enough I don’t have to blame me.” His atheltic goal are the 2006 Olympic Winter games in Torino. He very well can imagine himself stopping with amateur skating after that – with 20 years. Some day he will visit a theatre school. The theater is his passion. Maybe some day he will be a famous actor. Like the guy who played the Truman. Q&A with Peter Grutter Facts: Mister Grutter, do you miss your student Stephane Lambiel? Grutter: Not at the moment. The ten years we were together were amazing. But now he doesn’t need me anymore. Facts: Did the sudden split surprise you? Grutter: No, it was a split that became more and more obvious, at the end it was my decision. The last two years Stephane decided many important things without me. Facts: What was in the end the reason for the split? Grutter: A sum of little things. Like his decision to part ways with his management, to go to a psychologist without naming me the reasons. Also his decision to go to the university even when he doesn’t like to learn and promised me to concentrate on Olympia. But also the operation from which I only got to know later. I felt like I wasn’t needed anymore. Facts: Is it a risk to change everything one year before Olympia? Grutter: Yes, but Stephane loves the riks and mostly it went well. I wish him that he can medal in Torino.

Lumière:
