Memo: сорри, на английском, я сама 2/3 поняла, но ему и правда лучше гольфом занятъся, чем синяки набивать, тренируя квад)))) Toronto figure skater Patrick Chan has been holding something inside for a long time and has finally decided to let the cat out of the bag. The truth is ... he wishes he was a professional golfer. Sure, figure skating is great and it pays the bills and some day may take him to the top of the world, but the older he gets, the longer he skates, the more he wishes he could spend his days strolling on the grass instead of landing on his ass practicing the quad. “Sometimes I ask my mom why she didn’t put me in golf,” Chan said. “And she said that I couldn’t take the heat. I don’t like being in hot climates. Apparently, I used to whine a lot that it was too hot.” Chan, 19, has golfed since he was a kid, but switched to skating in a more serious way when it became apparent he had a gift on the ice. Still, there are times when he wishes golf was his livelihood and skating was just a hobby. “Skating is tough. It’s always indoors, inside walls, brick walls, and always cold and kind of depressing,” he said. Chan wouldn’t say what he shoots, though he claims to be pretty good. He recently returned from a 21/2 week vacation in Singapore and Thailand, after taking part in an ice show in South Korea with Olympic ice queen Yuna Kim. The holiday, he said, was great, though not long enough. But the trip has given him a new perspective on training. While last year was an incredible experience, with the Olympic Games at home and all that, it also was incredibly stressful and Chan has decided to shake things up. “We’re going to be taking a different approach this summer,” he said. “Instead of skating on weekends, we’re going to take weekends off and do things like mountain biking and golfing. We feel we should do less volume. At this point, it’s not about how many hours you practice, it’s about the quality of practice.” Chan said he needs something to look forward to on weekends besides just skating. Last season, he said, was more about “survival” than anything else. The fact is, despite winning a silver medal at the world championships a few weeks after the Vancouver Olympics, it was the toughest year of his life in many ways. The Ottawa-born skater was one of Canada’s gold medal hopes in Vancouver, but he never really hit his stride until the worlds. Chan was slammed with what he now believes was a case of Swine Flu late in the summer of 2009. That put him right behind the eight ball. Then he suffered a tear in his left calf, forcing him to withdraw from a Grand Prix event (the Rostelecom Cup) and miss weeks of training. At the Vancouver Olympics, Chan, who had won a silver medal at the worlds the year before, was under tremendous pressure to succeed, but stumbled in his short program, though he rebounded with his highest score ever in the long program to finish fifth overall. For some, a disappointment. But for Chan, it proved to be a tremendous learning experience and relief when it was over. “An Olympic year really takes a toll on you,” he said. Given that the reaction to his Phantom of the Opera freeskate was so positive, and the fact he never really had a chance to perfect it because of the injury, Chan has decided to keep the same program for the upcoming season — with a number of changes. He will, however, unveil a new short program, though he won’t say what it is. And yes, he does plan on doing a quad this year. That he didn’t have one in Vancouver was a source of some controversy. American Evan Lysacek of the U.S. won the gold without one, fuelling debate as to whether men’s skating is supposed to be about pushing the envelope technically, or more about artistry. Silver medallist Evgeni Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion, was infuriated that he was not awarded the gold in Vancouver, despite outjumping the much more artistic Lysacek. “Without a quad, it’s not men’s figure skating,” Plushenko said. “I believe the quad is the future of figure skating. The quad is necessary.” Fortunately, Chan’s future does include a quad. And more of his patented artistry. And more golf.
